"Red Chair"
Sintra engraving on paper, acrylic paint
8.5" x 8.5" (unconstructed)

My new little papercraft print, "Red Chair," is on view right now in
Milwaukee as part of PRNT:MK, the 2013 SGCI printmaking conference. I'm
not attending, sadly, because attending as someone not attached to a
university in some way is crazy expensive. So, I've been attending
about every other year. The picture at left was taken by Colin Roe
Ledbetter of the portfolio my piece is included in, Assorted Delights.
This piece is also in the upcoming show Cloud 9, at the Trunk Space in Phoenix, AZ with a reception on April 5th.

The piece has an inner chamber, and if you peer through the windows
in his torso you can see it, too. Though it's difficult to photograph,
I've attempted it to give you some idea.
For the portfolio this piece was made for I needed to construct about 20 individual figures, each one taking a little over an hour to make. By the time I'd finished cutting and gluing the last one I sort of hated them. It's been a couple weeks now, so I no longer hold such loathing for the needless complexity I engineered into his construction.
Originally, I though a family portrait (me, my partner, our cat) would be perfect, but the partner didn't want to be in it, and I thought it would send the wrong message if it was just me and the cat. So it became just the cat, Mulcifer, which I think was the best to begin with anyway.
Well, to be honest it's on indefinite loan not really mine, but it's as good in that I get to use it. It's a table top Takach, but will accommodate up to a 30" x 22" paper, and anything much bigger than that I can print at work.

The move was not quite as epic and demanding as I had expected given that the press is mostly aluminum, so it was doable for only two or three people to move it, though very heavy. My boss helped us move it out of Josephine Press, and then my partner (Jason), my friend Tim Musso and I moved it up into my loft. Luckily, we have a freight elevator in our building.
served me well in the past, but I really wanted to get started on the

print.
My boss sort of volunteered me to donate some artwork to yet another charity show. I think people are beginning to believe that I am far more charitable than I actually am.
Anyhow, the theme of this show is seasonal, Halloween, and they specifically requested that we price our items low. At the printshop where I work, we recently printed an edition of intaglio prints for the artist Aron Wiesenfeld and had stacks of narrow strips of Arches paper. So, inbetween being a helpful instructor during my monoprint class, I made little tiny skull monoprints. I started with reductive style monoprint inking: I inked the plate with a solid layer of black, and created the image by selectively removing ink. After printing the first skulls, I reworked the "ghost," the residue of ink left on the plate.
Carborundum Grit Aquatint Collagraph on Rives BFK

I finished this collagraph last week, just three days before its intended unveiling. It was made for an auction, raising funds for the Obama campaign. I had an impassioned speech that I gave at the request of the hosts, but I will spare you it, readers.

This collagraph is a carborundum grit aquatint: this style of collagraph involves painting with sand and glue, using a
drawing as guide, onto a plate and then rubbing ink into the surface.
The sand holds the ink and the glue is slick so it won't adhere. The
plate is then run through a press transferring the ink from plate to
paper.

Here's a picture of the plate while being made, with help from my cat Mulcifer. You can see the drawing that I used as the guide while I painted on the glue and carborundum. While I work, I have three separate bowls of glue and sand: one just glue, one with small amount of carborundum, and one with heavy carborundum. I also use a separate paint brush for each mixture.

Here's the actress Jennifer Lewis auctioning off my piece. She was hilarious and amazing for all 2 hours of the auction.

And a few more making of photos, this time without a cat. I printed an edition of 5 with one artist's proof at Josephine Press. To get a really good print, I should have done primarily handwipe on the plate, but wiping the carborundum is like wiping sandpaper so I used tarlatan followed by tons of paper wiping.

These guys were described as "thumb people" by my students when I made them last. I was demonstrating basic monoprint process to some artists new to the medium, and then spent my downtown reworking and printing the ghost (the residue of ink left on the plate from the previous print) and printing on scraps of paper. The shop I work in has been around for a few decades now, so the scraps of paper have built up considerably.

I have a million of these little demo prints from the monoprint class I teach every other Saturday and now I'm starting training to take over the etching class as well. I have no idea what to do with them all. Suggestions?

I run a monoprint printing session at Josephine Press, and last weekend I had a couple of new people, so I got to do some mini demos of the basic techniques. To the left, the first image is demonstration reductive inking for the figure, additive inking for the blue background, and stencils for the halo. Next to it is the ghost print. A ghost print is a print when only the residue left on the plate is printed. It always takes artists used to working painting on canvas and panel awhile to get accustomed to painting on plexiglass for monoprint, but at this point in my career, I'm far more adept at using the plexiglass.

I'm trying to get people to work more with multiple plate printing, so the second print I demonstrated I made sure to use two plate. The green background and the figures body were printed first, followed by the hands and face for the second print.
I just wrapped up a four day, four week, collagraph workshop at Josephine Press. You can see examples of some of my student's work on the JP blog, here.
Collagraphs are pretty fun, especially for someone new to printmaking. The plates are made out of all manner of stuff, much of it just garbage, and all glued down to a simple, cheap substrate like chipboard. I tore the back off an old calendar for this one. After gluing all the pieces down to the substrate, the plate is sealed with a couple of layers of acrylic medium to protect it from the ink and solvents applied to it.
I made two demo prints for the class. The first was a little house print, and the second was this raven collagraph. The plate is made with modeling past on a chipboard substrate. I cut the chipboard to the shape of the raven and then messed around with acrylic modeling paste to get the feathers and other features of the bird. Below are two prints, the the raven printed in conjunction with another plate, and then the ghost print of just the raven.
This is the third of the monotypes I made for my recent solo show at GCAC, The Disagreement. I drew my sculptures for it, and tried to place them in a world that gave them a little illustrative mentions without removing them from the gallery context. Which is to say, I wanted the environment I put them in in the monotype to mimic the sterility of the gallery.
Here's the sculpture, "They've Already Left," depicted in the print, with and without hordes of people:

The Press has been around, and in the same location, for nearly as long as I've been alive, so you can imagine that there are little bits of all sorts of things hidden away, some of them useful and some of them useless and long since expired. Like ink, for instance. I just found a drawer full of little pots of lovely custom colors some printer mixed up for a client years ago, all of them dried into solid lumps. But I also found a cache of linoleum scraps. They were destined to be thrown out, but I decided to try to use them to make some wee prints with. I can carve a little image in a sitting, and then print it when I have some downtown or after a workshop. This fellow I printed with the ink left over from the monoprint workshop last weekend, and used paper left over from old jobs (offprints and trial proofs, we have boxes of it) and some pretty blue hemp washi left over from a previous edition.

Like the last one, it's on 29" by 41" Arches paper and made with rubber based black ink, cut with varying degrees of flash oil. For such a simple image, it took me ages to draw. Keeping edges and the plate clean is a struggle with monotype, so I always had a bottle of isopropyl alcohol on hand to help tidy up fingerprints and to dip a Q-tip into to sharpen up the edges.
In printmaking, a print designates that something is reproducible in some way. A monoprint is a print that is one of a kind, but incorporates something reproducible, like if I had used a woodcut or stencil in conjunction. But, since this is entirely hand painted before printing, it is a monotype.
My friend Tim Musso and I just started having a monthly crit group. We met for the first time last night, and discussed each other's recent work and then set goals or homework for ourselves to fulfill by the time we meet next month. I showed him this and two other monotypes. One of my issues is the need to have small sellable work that can compliment my sculpture without distracting from it or being too illustrative. I don't know yet if these fulfill those requirements for me.

This monoprint, entitled "Didn't Know," is on 29" by 41" Arches paper and made with rubber based black ink, cut with varying degrees of flash oil. It took me about 8 hours to paint it onto the plexiglass plate using Q-tips, bits of rag, and a brush, and then printed it in a single pass. Layering a few more plates of ink onto it would probably look good, but I don't trust my single person registration skills on a piece this large.

The figure mimics the sculpture "But I didn't know" though the monoprint was made after the sculpture, not as a preparatory study.
Here's a girl having her picture taken in front of it like it's a tourist destination:
It was packed with people. I had no idea that the Santa Ana artwalk was so popular but it is. I sold quite a few small items priced under a $100, which means I didn't lose any money on the show which is always a risk. Galleries cover quite a bit of the costs of putting on a show, but by no means all of them.

People takes pictures with things far more now than I recall being popular in the past. It's funny to see people use sculptures as backdrops for photographs, as though they had the same personal historic value as a landmark.

I made three new monoprints for this show, to be blogged about shortly.

A young artist asked for my autograph, and then another did the same a few minutes later. It's strange because I'm by no means famous, but I suppose that a solo show looks pretty successful if it's something you've never done yourself.

The staff at GCAC were fantastic, helpful, and really kind. There were three exhibits going on in the complex simultaneously, including mine, and they kept the crowd in check pretty effectively.

Ah, so exhausting this was. I designed the imagery given the few themes that loosely unified the contributing artists and writers: that they were in California, and mostly attend(ed) California State University, Long Beach. From that, I riffed on the California flag for the bear imagery and kept the palate pretty muted, because hey, you don't hire me because you were expecting neons, do you?
The anthology was made in an edition of 650, with 50 of those being part of the deluxe edition and printed on dark blue paper with gun metal grey foiling on the text. Even though it's not "deluxe" I think I prefer the regular colorway on the grey paper. If you're interested, I have some of the left over state proofs for sale here on my etsy.

All postcards I handmade and I sent each one to a different friend who lives far way from me. I hope these all made it to their destinations relatively unscathed.
I think of them as two heads having an awkward conversation.

It's linocut on paper in an edition of 200. I added a ton of Japan drier to the ink so that I wouldn't take prints that were completely wet home with me. It actually worked pretty well, and the prints were completely dry to the touch the morning after printing.
It was pretty amazing, which wasn't particularly surprising, but I was a little surprised and pleased when the gallery owners invited me to do an inhouse demonstration of relief printmaking during the Laguna Artwalk. Dennis McNett is a Brooklyn based artist, and so couldn't attend both receptions.

I carved two new blocks for the demo. They're both a single color linoleum block on a variety of paper stocks in an edition of 100 each and can be left flat or folded into a three dimensional little paper ball.

I had a lot of fun having a couple little kids help me crank the press, and it's wonderful when people applaud when you pull a new print off the block like it's a magic trick.

The conference portfolios were pretty amazing, and I got to meet Katherine Polk, whose work I have long admired.

I made a special print to trade with other people for their artwork, and because I am insane, I printed an edition of 500 with four colors. I am in some ways trying to prepare myself for the book cover I'm working on right now. The book cover I will be printing in an edition of 750, but thankfully only two colors.

I made great use of the paper cutter I was gifted awhile ago.

Here's my table at the SGCI New Orleans conference. I traded this print for a few awesome prints by other people, and I gave some away, too. New Orleans was gorgeous and amazing and I wished that I could have stayed longer.

This was my second trip to NOLA. The first time I went was actually ten years ago, also to attend SGCI. I pretty much only ever travel for work, and I wonder if I should try actually going on a real vacation sometime.
I monitored another monoprint workshop on Saturday, and since there were so few students I had a chance to pull a print of my own. A two plate monoprint--I printed the navy blue first, and then put a layer of transparent grey over the figures. I used piles of Q-tips, but maybe I need to find a tool less wasteful.

This print is part of the Multiverse exchange at the SGCI 2012 New Orleans conference.

I originally intended to carve this relief print out of sintra, which is what I tend to prefer, but the deadline was closer than it should have been due to my procrastination, so I opted for linoleum, which is faster and easier to carve but loses sharpness sometimes.

I'm new to hair. To be honest, my fear of drawing hair is a little unfounded and embarrassing at this point in my career, but there it is. I'm trying to force myself to include more hair in my pieces now, just to get over it. Straight hair I think I have down pretty well now, but I don't know about curly hair.

This linocut is printed on a blue hemp washi, purchased from Hiromi Paper, and then chine colle-d onto Rives BFK.

I printed up a mess of prints at the LA Art Show as part of the Los Angeles Printmaking Society. The IFPDA sponsored us to come and demonstrate printmaking to the audience of collectors and looky-loos at the Art Show. It was lots of fun, and I was lucky enough to find a purchaser for two of my large sculptural prints. And that means they take up less space in my loft and I can make more sculptures soon.
He and his wife were completely charming in a way that I found surprising because I'm still such a naif that I expect actors to be somewhat like the characters they play.

David Caruso listened to my spiel and watched me print for a bit, but I didn't know what to say to him because I only know CSI: Miami from watching the Soup and when they'd film on my old campus.
Here are the three prints I made especially for the LA Art Show.

They are relief monoprints: I carved a relief silhouette, and then selectively inked it. I'm really happy with how they came out and am now printing the three plates together on a full size sheet of BFK.
I just finished up a woodcut workshop, and I had spent hours drawing out a beautiful bird carcass to use as the demo for the class and then I realized, an hour before the students were due to arrive, that I wouldn't have time to draw and carve the whole image and that using a really complex image would only freak out the students. So, the Catman. I drew the image minutes before the class started and was able to carve him inbetween helping the students. We used pine, which was horrid, but it was only fair that I made something with the same wood that they were using.

I printed him on white washi, a wretched Pepto pink paper as a kiss print (using the ghost ink as a gray, partially ink only a selected area), on fabric from the scrap bin, and with a little monotype overlay.
Yesterday, a man walked slowly up and down the crowded train car, slowly spelling out his name: "D"..."O"..."M"..."I"..."N"..."I"..."C"...followed by counting to ten, over and over, in Spanish. As he walked, he would look people directly in the eyes before passing them. He walked to the end of the car, and slowly pivoted before walked back to the front, while counting. At first, it was the sort of funny that's pitiable--the drunk old man singing to himself. But he never stopped, he had been performing this action when I boarded and was continuing after I left. It became almost threatening.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11848979275790832019noreply@blogger.com1
